Several homeowners have contacted the Board regarding the greenish film in the lake. Our treatment service, Aquatic Technologies has identified it as blue-green algae. They informed us that this particular algae is prevalent throughout the area at this time due to the unusually warm fall combined with a lack of rainfall. At this point in the season, a chemical solution is not possible as NJ state law prohibits treatment of lakes after September. We have been advised to leave the algae undisturbed to prevent further growth. It is expected that the next large rain storm will disperse the algae and wash it out of the lake.

Laurie, Thanks for the information. Checking in the weekend of 10/26, the algae seems to be clearing up. Hopefully it is on the way out.
Thank you for the attachment on the ecological concerns about the algae. A little information as far as human concerns go, blue-green algae does release toxins causing skin irritation, intestinal distress, and damage to the liver and nervous systems. Since the amount of toxins are probably very small, there is no need to panic. However, drinking algae infested water can cause toxic poisoning and respiratory irritation. Also, contact with skin can cause an allergic reaction with symptoms such as itchy eyes and irritated skin. So just be cautious when spending time at the lake!
